Identity

We have created ourselves in an effort to be seen

It has been said that beautiful souls have been lost to lost causes

Yet you are here, a beautiful soul, that has created herself in an effort to be seen

Confused, conflicted and paradoxical

And you are here and you are creating yourself in an effort to be seen

Hatred is tolerable

Love is welcomed

But insignificance, to you my love, is unbearable

We have created ourselves in an effort to be seen

Painted colorful walls that would hide the parts of us that we deem unacceptable

Waiting to be invited and recognized

Because in actuality, does a tree fall in a forest if nobody was there to hear it fall?

Does it exist for that matter?

We have created ourselves in an effort to be heard

Our voices beautiful and loud, but not too loud

Because loud is passionate

But too loud

Simply unacceptable

We have created ourselves in an effort to be loved

Censored the parts of us that make us real

Disregarded the things that made us who we were

And created homes out of people that seemed to be worth no more than cheap motel rooms

What have we become?

Where is your voice, my child?

You did not create yourself

You were created

Opinionated, passionate and slightly melodramatic

To be seen, to be heard, and to be loved

You are human

And you deserve to mess up

To be stupid

And reckless

And that doesn’t make you any less of a person

You will continue to create yourself in an effort to create yourself

Because that is what should be done

You will not create a person worth seeing or worth hearing or worth loving

Because that person already exists

You will create a person that is accepting of herself

Because pride is not enough to sustain you, my love

Pride is fragile

Penetrable

And unkind

Because it has been said that beautiful souls deserve more than to be seen and to be heard and to be loved
