Mother Earth Day

It’s that time of the year again! The day where most people start caring about the Earth for 24 hours, and then continue to pollute it when it’s over. That’s right, it’s Mother Earth day. What makes Mother Earth day so special, though? To answer simply, every April 22nd is known as Mother Earth Day, or just Earth Day, and the purpose of this is to raise awareness of the challenges to the well-being of our planet and the life it supports. “Mother Earth day recognizes that the Earth, with its ecosystems, provides its inhabitants with life and sustenance. It also aims to raise awareness that humans have a collective responsibility to promote harmony with nature and to balance the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations.” (globaldimension.org.uk).

What makes THIS Mother Earth day special, though? I wouldn’t call this a coincidence, but today is also the day that representatives from more than 170 countries are going to be gathering at the UN Headquarters in New York to sign the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Yep, that’s right, Mother Earth day is coinciding with the day that the Paris Agreement on Climate Change is being signed! To explain in further detail, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change was a worldwide agreement with the aim of protecting the planet from Global Warming. “In 2015 COP21, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, will aim to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.” (cop21paris.org). Mother Earth Day is truly a glorious day, so go outside, care for your environment, and try not to fall back into your unhealthy and carbon-filled habits tomorrow.
