Ashley Frangipane, also known by her stage name Halsey, was born on September 29 1994 in New Jersey. The name ‘Halsey’ was chosen because it is anagram of her real name additionally it is also a street in Brooklyn where she spent most of her time in her teenage years. Growing up, she played the cello, violin, and viola before moving on to the acoustic guitar at the age of 14. Around the age of 16, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In one of her interviews, she described herself as “tri-bi” which identifies herself as bisexual, bipolar, and biracial. At the age of 18, she started facing financial problems and the only way she could pay her rent was by music. Unfortunately, due to her money shortage, instead of going to college to major in fine arts like she planned on doing, she enrolled in a community college majoring in creative writing.


Halsey began her career by posting song covers on YouTube then later in 2014 she posted her song ‘Ghost’ on Soundcloud. This song gave Halsey the attention she deserved which resulted to her signing with Astralwerks record label. She then released her EP called Room 93 on the same year and toured with the band The Kooks as an opening act. A year later on August 28 2016, she released her album Badlands which she described it as an “angry female record.” Her latest collaboration was with the Chainsmokers, the song ‘Closer’ has stayed on the charts for 12 weeks so far reaching Platinum and bypassing Sia’s ‘Cheap Thrills.’ The song also became Halsey and the Chainsmokers’ first number one single on Billboard Hot 100.

Outside the US, the song broke the charts in more than ten countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
