Wavves is an American alt-rock/indie band based in San Diego, California. Nathan Williams, a songwriter, started the band on his own in 2008 when he was 21 years old. He quit his job and started writing and recording music using an old cassette recorder, and these same recordings became Wavves’ first two albums. Wavves is influenced by bands such as Nirvana, Pixies, and the Ramones.
The band’s first two albums were recorded and written solely by Williams, and were named “Wavves” and “Wavvves”. After being recognized by fans, Williams went on tour in the US and Europe. Their first albums consist of fuzzy and distorted sounds. Later on, Nathan teamed up with Zach Hill, a drummer, and Stephen Pope, a bassist, to record their third album; King of the Beach. This album was released in 2010 and received generally good reviews, being their first studio-recorded album. The band also released an EP named Life Sux in 2011. Then, in 2013 Wavves released Afraid of Heights, which came to be the band’s most popular album up to date. They also wrote the song “Nine is God” for the video game Grand Theft Auto V. Their most recent album, “V” came out in 2015, and they toured last summer around the US. Wavves is even working on a new album, which is being released in the beginning of April.
Currently, Wavves consists of Nathan on vocals and guitar, Alex Gates on guitar, Stephen Pope on bass, and Brian Hill on drums. Nathan Williams even recently created his own record label, Ghost Ramp. Not only does Williams record with Wavves, but he also works with and in bands such as Cloud Nothings, Spirit Club, and Sweet Valley.
