Kendrick Lamar’s latest hit has failed to disappoint fans, as the urban legend knocks another song out of the park. (or as King Kendrick puts it “his left stroke just went viral.”) Before I get into this article, I recommend readers watch and listen to his new song “Humble.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvTRZJ-4EyI) What makes this new song so mesmerizing is not only is the lyricism at par with Kendrick’s typical artistry with words, but the videography of the music video is out of this world.

Kendrick explores numerous different themes, and ideas throughout the song and in very creative ways. One of the main themes he explores is the manipulation of media. Quoth Kendrick, “I’m so sick and tired of the Photoshop. Show me something natural like a** with some stretch marks.” In this line Kendrick challenges the media’s portrayal of women and their lack of authenticity in this process. During this line, a two sided video depicts a scene in which a woman walking between the two videos transitions from being completely drenched in make-up to her true self. This promotes the true natural beauty of women and helps set more realistic standards and appreciation for women.

During this shot, Kendrick essentially creates a scene where the right represents the fake and manipulated reality that media constantly creates, while the left captures the true unedited/unfiltered world. Later, Kendrick appears to have his face split in two as depicted in the picture above, however he looks the same in both. This captures Kendrick’s authenticity and highlights how he isn’t a fake product of media manipulation. Apart from this message of media vs. reality, Kendrick explores many other themes throughout which he establishes that rap and the hip hop genre has more to it than words that just rhyme. Kendrick clearly sets himself apart  as the true savior and king of rap.
