On Thursday, April 13, 2017, during March Madness, “Refresh,” a student-run speaking event, took place in the auditorium at AIS. Refresh is somewhat similar to TEDx; it has the same purpose, which is giving people the voice to express their ideas. There were a decent amount of people who spoke at the event – all of which revolved around the theme of “Refresh” one way or another, whether it be in the form of telling one to refresh or start anew soon because life won’t stop and wait for you to make your choices or it may be in the form of starting anew in one’s regimen or it may even be in the form of refreshing one’s ideology towards a matter like poetry and how it’s a one of the purest, if not the purest, forms of expression.
What exactly is the purpose of starting anew anyways? What’s the purpose of “refreshing,” if you will? To put it simply, if one allows themselves to never step back and reflect or take a break, everything will begin to accumulate – and in some cases, that can have a good effect on someone, but nine out of ten times, when stress begins to accumulate, it can pose a serious threat on one’s health. Stress has often been called the silent killer. Stress has been proven to be one of the major factors that lead to the some of the top causes of death, which include heart disease, cancer, accidents, and suicide amongst others. So, don’t overwork yourselves… don’t allow yourself to put anything above your own health. Work, but don’t overdo it to the point where’s all you do.
At the end of the event, the organizers asked the audience if anyone had a story they’d like to share. Nobody was really prepared for such an offer and as such, nobody really volunteered, though it was a great offer. I personally thought that this was a great event. As this was the first time it took place, there weren’t many speakers. However, quality trumps quantity and the sharing of ideas, which is something that’s inherently human or something we – as homo sapiens – have a wondrous ability to conjure, is a purpose that will never grow old. This event alongside any medium of expression (journalism, speaking, etc.) gives people a voice and that in itself is a worthy cause.
